The Beach Bum

This was by far the strangest movie I have ever seen. It is odd that Matthew is a supposed Christian but he was willing to play that role. I think the reason was partly that he was tired of getting teased for being a Christian. Also he wanted to show all of them, whoever they were making fun of him, that is what the future could be like for any of those who are without Jesus. When you take any and all morality away, that is what life looks like...non stop cheating, drugs, alcoholism, homeless living, vandalism, pain and even an early death for some. That movie taught many life lessons. Don't get too wasted or you could die was the main one.

I found it so ironic that with his complete lack of morals, why he cared that his wife was cheating on him. Why is it that he could cheat as much as he wanted, but he didn't allow her to cheat? For some reason it seems worse when a woman cheats.

You would think that would have given him a wake up call, but it didn't. I will now ruin the end because who knows if you will watch it. He sets on fire 50 million dollars on a boat and just lets it burn. My jaw dropped at that part for a while. I couldn't believe it. It wonder if all that was based on a true story. It makes you wonder. There are people like Moondog. They have no civility, no worry for the future. Those people are totally crazy of course. They don't care what anyone thinks of them. At the end he starts wearing women's clothing. His publisher asks why he is wearing women's clothes. He says, "What women's clothing?" I think that was meant to say that men who dress like women have gone so crazy that they don't even notice what they put on anymore. They are so far gone in their head that they just wear anything.

A great line at the end was, "You know what I love about you Moondog, you treat people horribly and they just have to take it." And they both just laugh. It's funny but not. He is the perpetual drowning person that everyone wants to or tries to save. He carries a cat around half of the movie. That could be symbolic that he wants to be like a cat. He wanted to be everyone's pet that they took care of, and he was. No matter what trouble he got into, there was always someone that could rescue him. That is why people like him never learn. They never have to say sorry. They never deal with consequences for what they do. They always luck out somehow.

It kind of made me think of my ex. He messed up his family and lost his wife and his house, but his parents were there to take care of him. So he will never learn. He will just keep messing up over and over and someone will always pick up his slack. Such is the case with some people.

The rest of us have to get smart and learn to grow up.
